The Survey Builder is a drag-and-drop editor for designing and deploying adaptive surveys. You can add text, multiple-choice, vocal, and AI follow-up question types, define conditional display rules to show or hide questions based on previous answers, set respondent quotas by demographic, and share your survey via a unique link or embed code. Each survey you create lives inside a project, giving you one place to manage questions, responses, and analysis.

What you can build

  • Multi-step surveys with any combination of text, choice, vocal, and AI-generated questions
  • Adaptive flows where questions appear only when a prior answer matches a condition
  • Quota-controlled surveys that automatically screen out respondents once a target count is reached
  • Surveys embedded in your own website or distributed via a shareable URL with pre-filled parameters

Creating a new survey

1

Open your project

Navigate to Projects from the main dashboard and open the project where you want to create the survey.
2

Create the survey

Click New Survey or Create Survey from the project view. Smartinterview creates a blank survey and opens it in the builder.
3

Add questions

Use the Add question button in the left panel to add your first question. Select a question type from the type picker — the question appears in the main editor area. Continue adding questions in any order; you can reorder them by dragging.
4

Configure each question

Click a question in the left panel to open its editor in the centre area. Write the question text, add answer choices or configure vocal/AI options, and set any display conditions from the Conditions section.
5

Add an ending

Add at least one ending using the Add ending button in the Endings section of the left panel. Endings let you display a thank-you message or redirect respondents to another URL when the survey is complete.
6

Save and publish

The builder auto-saves your changes after a short pause. When you’re ready, set the survey status to live from the Settings tab to start collecting responses.

Builder interface

The builder has three main areas:

Left panel — Questions

Lists all questions and endings. Drag items to reorder them. The Conditions section at the bottom of the panel lets you add display conditions to the selected question.

Centre — Question editor

Edit the selected question’s text, answer options, and type-specific settings. Switch between Edit and Test modes to preview how the question looks and behaves.

Settings tab

Configure survey-level options: title and description, colours, theme, return URL, and quota rules. Accessible via the Settings tab in the header navigation.
Switch to Test mode in the top toolbar to interact with your survey as a respondent without recording a real response. This is the fastest way to validate skip logic and AI follow-up behaviour before publishing.

Collecting responses

Once your survey is live, share the unique survey URL with respondents or embed it on your website. Each respondent receives an individual session, and their answers are stored separately. You can monitor responses and progress from the project view.
Vocal questions and smart questions (AI follow-up) consume tokens from your account balance. Review your balance in Account → Tokens before publishing at scale.
